Largest Top Load Washer - Maytag Lifestyle Image

If you have a household of four or more people - or a family with young children - as you shop for a new washer you may be interested in finding the largest top load washing machine possible! We've put together reviews of the seven best and largest top load washing machines for 2020 complete with prices, features, and links to customer reviews so you can choose the best option for your needs.

These top load washers usually have an impeller rather than an agitator to boost tub capacity, and are considered high efficiency machines that use less water to wash your clothes. They are all a minimum of 5.0 cubic feet, with plenty of room to wash a king sized comforter. If you're looking for more info on choosing a new washer, check out our washing machine buying guide!

Prices range from $999 to $1,299, although keep in mind that holiday sales and rebates can shave 20% or more off of the list price. Maytag is definitely a leader in this category, but Samsung, Whirlpool, and LG offer some stiff competition! The models are listed in no particular order but are numbered for your convenience. Let's dig in!

Table of Contents

  1. Maytag MVWB965HW*
  2. Samsung WA50R5400AV
  3. Maytag MVW7232HW
  4. Maytag MVW7230HW*
  5. Whirlpool WTW7120HW
  6. LG WT7800CW
  7. Samsung WA54R7200AW

Models marked with a * are agitator washers rather than high efficiency impeller washers.

3 Factors to Consider with XL Top Load Washers

  • Tub Depth. Some of these monstrous top loaders can have very deep tubs that shorter members of your household may not be able to reach!

  • External Dimensions. If your old washer was an average size model, it likely has smaller external dimensions than many of these huge options. If your washer and dryer are enclosed in a closet, consider the depth of the new model you're considering (plus room for water hookups) and the width as well. You should also measure any doorways or halls the appliance will have to pass through - in particular, older homes can have narrower doorways.

  • A Matching XL Dryer. A dryer that's made to match with an average-size washer may not be able to handle loads from a bigger machine. Overloading your dryer can make parts wear out faster and shorten its lifespan, so to get the full use out of your big top load washer, make sure to grab a dryer that is at least 1.5 times the capacity of the washer (but preferable twice the capacity).

1. Maytag MVWB965HW - 6.0 cu. ft. - $1,299

First up on our list of the largest top load washing machine models is the Maytag MVWB965HW. Unlike many of the largest washers on our list, this model has an agitator! This agitator washer uses PowerSpray technology that recirculates water and detergent from bottom to top for a stain-fighting boost. It's all part of the PowerWash System: an internal water heater and optimal dispensers for detergent, fabric softener, and oxygenated additives top off this cleaning system.

Options include Deep Fill, ideal for heavily soiled loads, and a steam cycle option for yet another stain-fighting boost. This is Maytag's largest agitator top load washing machine on our list! It's also one of the largest top loaders, period. The dial control knob plus cycle status indicator lights make this washer easy to use. You can even watch how it washes through the tinted glass lid!

Maytag offers a 10-year limited parts warranty on the direct drive motor and durable stainless steel wash basket. If you want to do a week's worth of laundry in one load rather than two or three, this is the washing machine for you! At the time of this writing, this is the largest top load agitator washing machine on the market today!

2. Samsung WA50R5400AV - 5.0 cu. ft. - $999

Samsung is always offering innovations in appliances, and the Samsung WA50R5400AV is a great example of this. It's available in white at $899 or fingerprint resistant black stainless steel at $999. Wifi connectivity with the Samsung smart washer app also allows you to control and monitor your washer from your smartphone. Never forget about a clean load of laundry again!

With the ActiveWash built-in sink, you can soak and scrub items that need extra care before dropping them into the washer. Vibration Reduction Plus technology is an upgrade to Samsung's original VRT, reducing vibrations 40% more for even quieter operation. The EZ Access tub is shallower, so it's easy to reach the bottom to unload clothes while still offering a huge capacity.

This model also includes great premium features like a Super Speed option you can add to different wash cycles to reduce wash time, a direct drive motor, and an internal heater. The soft-close lid is another favorite. If you pre-wash items often or want a smart washer, this option among the largest top load washing machines is a great choice!

  • 12 Cycles: Normal, Heavy Duty, Permanent Press, Activewear, Whites, Bedding/Waterproof, Quick Wash, Delicates, Darks, Rinse + Spin, Spin Only, Self Clean

3. Maytag MVW7232HW - 5.3 cu. ft. - $999

At the lower end of the price range for the largest top load washing machine options is the Maytag Bravos XL Maytag MVW7232HW. This smart capable washer comes in white at $999 or metallic slate at $1,099 and is replacing the popular MVWB835DW for 2020. Like the first model on our list from Maytag, this one comes with optimal dispensers to automatically dispense detergent, fabric softener, and oxygenated additives throughout the cycle, and the PowerWash system with a direct drive motor and a stainless steel wash basket. However, it's an impeller model rather than an agitator model and has a smaller footprint.

One feature we like is the SmoothClose windowed lid, which closes slowly just in case your hand or head is in the way! The Deep Fill option is ideal for handling heavily soiled items, and the Sanitize cycle removes 99.9% of common household bacteria. A new feature for 2020 is optional wi-fi connectivity, so you can control your washer through your smartphone and receive alerts when a cycle is complete. Another new feature is a built-in water faucet for pretreating stains and soils.

If you're looking for stain-fighting, soil-fighting power, but maybe you need a washer with a smaller footprint or lower price, this model is a great alternative to #1 on our list. The only thing it's really lacking compared to other fully featured washers in this price range is a steam option, but the built-in water faucet gives it an edge.

  • 13 Cycles: Normal/Regular, Heavy Duty, Whites, Sanitize w/ Oxi, Towels, Bulky Items, Custom Cycle, Quick Wash, Delicates, Wrinkle Control, Colors, Drain & Spin, Clean Washer

  • 7 Options: Deep Fill, Remote Enable, Fabric Softener, Delay Start, Extra Rinse, Cycle Signal, Extra Power

  • Energy Star rated

  • Built-in water faucet for pretreating

New Call-to-action

4. Maytag MVW7230HW - 5.2 cu. ft. - $999

For 2020, Maytag is replacing the popular MVWB865GW with the Maytag MVW7230HW, a 5.2 cubic foot agitator washer with smart wifi connectivity retailing at $999. The agitator, combined with the Deep Fill option and Extra Power button, means this model may appeal to people who need to wash heavy-duty work clothes or heavily soiled items.

Maytag Commercial Technology provides a 2X Life tested direct drive system and commercial springs - although it's not quite to the level of other commercial washers for home use, it's still a great pick for people concerned about durability. The sleek controls and tinted glass slow-close lid give this washer a premium feel. Automatic load size sensing technology helps you save water. Unlike the previous version, this new model is Energy Star rated. It also now comes with a built-in water faucet to rinse away loose soils or soak fabrics before starting a cycle. Plus, new wifi connectivity allows you to start a cycle remotely and receive a notification when a cycle is complete.

If you prefer an agitator washing machine but are interested in bonus features that make laundry easier, this model may be right for you! This model retails at the same base price as the previous 865 model but comes with more features.

  • 13 Cycles: Normal/Regular, Heavy Duty, Whites, Sanitize w/ Oxi, Towels, Bulky Items, Custom Cycle, Quick Wash, Delicates, Wrinkle Control, Colors, Drain & Spin, Clean Washer w/ Affresh

5. Whirlpool WTW7120HW - 5.3 cu. ft. - $999

The Whirlpool WTW7120HW comes in white $999 or chrome shadow at $1,099. This 5.3 cubic foot capacity washer sets up the controls differently than you may be used to: first, you select "What to Wash" (Mixed, Casuals, Whites, Delicates, or Bulky/Sheets) and then "How to Wash" (Normal, Quick, Cold, Deep Water, ColorLast) and any options you prefer. Indicator lights for temperature, soil level, and spin speed will shift depending on the combination of selections to help you optimize the cycle for the load.

Take advantage of Whirlpool Load and Go - fill up the dispenser with enough detergent for up to 20 loads and let the washer do the rest. A pretreat station includes a built-in dual-temperature faucet and a brush so you can spot-treat stains and soils before the wash. Use the Deep Water Wash option for loose soils. Optional smart connectivity will alert you when a cycle is completed, saving you time and effort.

The LED display shows the estimated time remaining so it's easy to check on the status of a load. Adaptive wash technology with Active Bloom wash action aims to clean your fabrics thoroughly and gently, while helpful options like the pretreat station make it easier to manage stains and soils.

  • What to Wash: Regular, Delicates, Whites, Colors, Bulky Items, Towels

  • How to Wash: Normal, Wrinkle Control, Heavy Duty, Sanitize with Oxi, Cold Wash, Quick

6. LG WT7800CW - 5.5 cu. ft. - $1,099

Another highly rated option among the largest top load washing machine models is the LG WT7800CW. This model offers a ton of different cycles and options. TurboWash 3D Technology uses an impeller that rotates in the opposite direction of the drum to create a powerful wash action for an effective clean that's still gentle on clothes. This is an interesting alternative to an agitator, while still satisfying the preference of some consumers for more clothing turnover and more intense washing action.

Although there's no steam cycle in this washer, the Sanitize cycle is a great option for eliminating germs, bacteria, and allergens. TurboWash technology saves 20 minutes on larger loads without sacrificing cleaning performance by combining the rinse and spin stages of each wash. Features like a cycle for waterproof items, a StainCare option, Water Plus option, and Soak option give you flexibility in how you tackle soiled items.

A SlamProof lid, internal water heater, the SmartRinse Jet Spray System, and LoDecibel Quiet Operation round out the features package of this top load washer and make it a great option for large households.

  • 12 Cycles: Normal, Heavy Duty, Bedding, Deep Wash, Oxi Sanitize, Whites, Pre Wash+Normal, Delicates, Perm Press, Speed Wash, Waterproof, Downloaded

  • 12 Options: Soak, Extra Rinse, Delay Wash, Control Lock, Water Plus, ColdWash, Rinse+Spin, Spin Only, StainCare, Tub Clean, Remote Start, Wi-Fi

It has the Active WaterJet built-in faucet for pretreating stains and soils, plus a Self Clean cycle that uses jets of hot water and high spin speeds to eliminate bacteria and odors from the wash tub. You'll also find a Deep Fill option and Presoak option to better handle heavy soils.

For a quiet wash, VRT+ technology reduces vibration 40% more than Samsung's original Vibration Reduction Technology. Other convenient features include the Samsung Smart Care app and soft close glass lid. The Swirl+ Drum interior is super smooth to prevent snags and designed to extract water more quickly.

This washer has a ton of great features on top of its huge capacity! It offers effective cleaning that can be customized to your clothes. It was designed with accessibility in mind with an AUI and braille controls. Samsung offers a one year full parts and labor warranty, plus three years on the tub and 10 years on the motor.
