What is a Slide-In Range?
Also known as front control ranges, today's slide-in ranges are a little different than slide-ins from 5+ years ago. Today's slide-in ranges are freestanding ranges with finished sides and no backguard. If you want to show off your backsplash, a slide-in range is a great choice! Learn more about freestanding vs slide-in ranges here. They are designed to fit in a 30" cutout for a traditional freestanding range.
A few years ago, slide-in ranges were a little different. They had a slightly more "built-in" look because the cooktop extended past the range's sides to overlap the countertop slightly. You were supposed to cut out a section of your countertop, leaving a "filler strip" of countertop material across the back, because the ranges weren't as deep as a freestanding range.
Front Control Ranges Today | Older Slide-In Ranges |
Full-depth, designed to fit in the same cutout as a traditional range with a backguard | Shallower depth than a freestanding range, required a "filler strip" at the back |
Cooktop surface usually does not overlap countertop (can purchase filler strips separately if needed) | Cooktop surface designed to overlap countertop |
Finished sides - can install with one or both sides visible | Unfinished sides - needed to be installed between cabinets |
Keep these differences in mind if you are replacing an older slide-in range. If you are replacing a freestanding range with a front control range, the process is usually pretty seamless!
Slide-In Electric Range Buying Tips
Consider the stovetop configuration. Many of the slide-ins on our list offer "bridge elements" that connect two elements to heat extra-large cookware, griddles, and oblong pots. Expandable elements are another feature to consider - these elements can be expanded from 6" to 9" and even up to 12" to accommodate different sizes of cookware. In general, all of the ranges on our list have nicely featured stovetops and ovens
Check out convection ovens. There are two types of convection oven: fan convection and true convection. Fan convection incorporates a fan into the back of the oven to circulate the hot air better. You'll likely notice that your roasts are more evenly browned and that multiple racks of cookies come out evenly done. True convection is the next step up and incorporates a heating element with the fan. You can read more about convection here.

The next model on our list of slide-in electric range reviews is the Bosch HEI8056U, which comes with a traditional slide-in feature that many people miss: cooktop edges that overlap the countertop.
